Cam Newton Provides Update On Julian Edelman's Injury

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton provided an update on the status of injured teammate Julian Edelman on Monday.

“I can confirm he’s getting better,” Newton told WEEI during his Monday morning interview via CBS Boston. “He’s doing well. For him to be everything that he is — and I know he may be listening or he may be having his people listen — he’s good, man. Just to see him in good spirits and knowing that we’re doing our job as a team so when he comes back, it’s evident that he’ll have help at that position.”

Edelman, Newton's primary wide receiver, is eligible to come off the injured reserve list beginning this week after missing the last three games following knee surgery. During that span, the Patriots have returned to form with victories in each of their last two games after coming off a four-game losing streak.

But the addition of Edelman should give New England an even greater boost if he's at full strength.

“We just need him to be healthy. We need him to have that same speed that he’s always had, but now being a little more healthy, he’s now able to cut it loose without necessarily thinking,” Newton said. “I think that’s all he wanted, and that’s all we wanted as a team.

“Julian Edelman is obviously a pinnacle; I would say a person that’s on Mount Rushmore of Patriots history over the years for everything that he has done and what he represents as a player. So I’m just anticipating the day that he comes back."

Edelman recorded 21 receptions for 315 yards during six appearances in 2020 before being placed on IR.

Newton led the Patriots to a 23-17 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football, finishing with 118 yards and a touchdown on 13 of 17 passing and 21 yards and a score on 11 rushing attempts.
