Arizonans are rushing out to get tested for COVID-19 before deciding to travel for Thanksgiving, and more people are struggling to find a place to do so as the holiday approaches.
Antigen tests (also known as rapid tests) are in demand right now since they have a faster turnaround time, but there are some questions about their accuracy. The PCR test is more reliable, but it can take a few days to receive the results.
"I urge you to have enough planning time so you can do the PCR test, which is in more plentiful supply," former state health director Will Humble told AZFamily.
If you're looking to get tested but don't know where to go, the Arizona Department of Health Services is the best place to search. The website maps testing sites and includes information on what kind of tests they offer, hours of service, and if tests are free. Most testing sites require people to pre-register.
Arizona State University is working with state health services to offer saliva tests, which returns results in approximately 48 hours. These tests are appointment only and locations can be found here.
The city of Phoenix is offering free rapid COVID-19 through it's mobile testing van. Tests are offered to everyone - including non-Phoenix residents and those without insurance - but an appointment is required.
CVS and Walgreens are also offering COVID-19 tests. Both stores are offering free tests to patients who meet certain requirements, but CVS is also selling tests for $139.
