A 34-year-old man was arrested for allegedly taking dozens of rent checks from several apartment complexes in the Portland metro area, according to FOX 12.
Beaverton police said they responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle around 12:30 p.m. on December 5. Officers arrived to find a Ford Explorer sitting in front of the manager's office at Hunters Run apartment complex, located at 16201 Northwest Schendel Avenue.
Officials said Gabriel Vogel, of Portland, was sleeping inside the vehicle and took him into custody. After searching the Explorer, they found a tool set, night vision binoculars and a self-made burglary device. Police determined that the 34-year-old was fishing checks out of apartment drop boxes. They found nearly 70 rent checks stolen across 10 apartment complexes in Beaverton, Portland and Vancouver, Washington.
Vogel was jailed on charges of f aggravated identity theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of heroin, possession of methamphetamine, possession of burglary tools, and mail theft. Officers said they contacted the apartment complexes known to be involved.
There are other possible thieves looking to take something other than rent checks in Oregon. In fact, one study claims a city in the Beaver State has a big package theft problem.
