After 59 years in Michigan, Kmart will close its last location in the state.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the last Kmart is located in Marshall, just about 20 minutes east of Battle Creek. The location is set to close by November 21.
The discount retailer is currently hiring temporary employees to help with closing the store down.
The Kmart in Marshall has thrived so well and survived due to the population size of the city and it being the only large discount retailer in the area.
The last Michigan location standing opened its doors in the early 1990s, but that wasn't the state's first location. Kmart got its start in 1962 when S.S. Kresge Co. opened the very first location in Garden City. Unfortunately, the Garden City location was closed down 55 years later in 2017.
Kmart was also once headquartered in Troy, but the corporate headquarters was closed in 2006 after merging with Sears and relocating to Illinois.
The city will soon be left with the task of figuring out what retailer can replace Kmart in the Marshall area shopping center.
No comment about the store closure from Transform co., Kmart's parent company, was made to the Detroit Free Press.
