Gospel music came to Africa through the music of Zimbabwe-born guitarist and vocalist Machanic Manyeruke (born in 1950) and his three-piece group, the Puritans. Manyeruke initially attracted attention in the early '70s as the leader of a large choir, the Gospel Singers.
