We Came as Romans emerged in the late 2000s with a sound rooted in post-hardcore and screamo. Hailing from the Detroit suburb of Troy, Michigan, the band became fixtures on the Billboard charts with acclaimed efforts like 2013's hard-hitting Tracing Back Roots and 2015's more melodic rock-driven We Came as Romans. The untimely death of frontman Kyle Pavone in 2018 resulted in the group going on hiatus, but they returned in 2022 with the cathartic Darkbloom.
