INTERVIEW: What Martin Garrix Would Do 'In The Name Of Love'
By Nicole Mastrogiannis
September 7, 2016
Over the last few years, Martin Garrix has produced some of our favorite dance tunes. From his 2013 EDM hit "Animals," to his 2015 collaboration with Usher "Don't Look Down," at only 20 years old, Garrix is one talented young producer -- and his latest single "In The Name of Love" featuring Bebe Rexha is further proof. The current single has been a huge success, breaking into the top 10 on charts in multiple countries like the Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, UK, United States and Australia. Top it all off with the fact that he's is currently on a worldwide tour, and 2016 may be Martin’s most successful year yet.
We recently caught up with Martin when he stopped by iHeartRadio HQ for an exclusive interview. He told us about his new collaboration with Bebe, performing live on "The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon," plans for releasing more new music, and just what he would do himself "In The Name Of Love."
On his collaboration with Bebe Rexha "In The Name Of Love"
"I met Bebe in January earlier this year in LA, and went to her place, and she played me all her unreleased music, and it blew my mind. She has such an amazing, incredible voice. One month later I had this raw demo of 'In The Name of Love' and it was a no-brainer. She crushed it, sent me a vocal stem, I went back into the studio, did my thing, and [after some] back and forth we came up with 'In The Name of Love.'"
Martin recently made his US TV debut with Bebe when they performed their single live on "The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon." The duo had the show's band The Roots accompanying them. But instead of positioning himself behind a DJ booth, Martin played the song on guitar, an instrument he's been playing for years (about 8/9 years to be exact). He tells us the reason he's even producing music is because he installed a program on his computer to put in his guitar melodies. But he also tells us he was a bit nervous to perform on Fallon's late night show because he was only given three days notice. He tells us, "It was really cool. I was very nervous because I had like three days notice. They had told me on Saturday, my team. So I was stressing, but [there was] lots of rehearsing in the time that we had, and it was super fun."
On his plans to release more new music
"In The Name of Love" is one of many new songs coming from Martin Garrix this year. He's already plotting the release of his next single. He says he's "working hard on the follow up for 'In The Name of Love' and recently sat down with his label to talk about his next sure-to-be hit.
"I had this four-hour meeting with my label I'm signed to, just brainstorming about which one is going to be the next single, how are we gonna release it, when we're gonna release it, and who's gonna feature on it. I'm very, very excited."
So just what would Martin Garrix do "In The Name of Love?" We asked, and he answered! Check it out:
In the name of love, would you move across the country or in your case maybe the world?
"Yes."
In the name of love, would you watch your girlfriend's favorite shows with her even though you don't like them?
"Yeah, I would. Maybe pretend like I'm watching when I'm sleeping."
In the name of love, would you patiently (or impatiently) wait outside the dressing room while your girlfriend drags you on a shopping trip?
"That's horrible. Maybe. If it doesn't happen too often, then I'm okay. It should not happen every day."
In the name of love, would you get a tattoo?
"No. I kinda want to have a tattoo, but I kinda don't want to. My mom's gonna kill me, so I have no tattoos."
In the name of love, would you wear something your girlfriend bought you, even though you don't like it?
"I would wear it in the house, but as soon as I left the house I would put something on over it. I would still be very appreciative that she bought it, but in the end, I wear what I want, what my style is."
In the name of love, would you let them have access to your phone with their thumbprint?
"No. I don't think so because, it sounds stupid, but there's this part of your life which you still want to have private."
In the name of love, would you try food you didn't necessarily like before?
"Yeah, I would."
**Fun fact: Martin has tried many out-of-the-ordinary foods, including Grasshoppers -- he tells us it's "not [his] favorite dish." 😳
In the name of love, would you go skydiving?
"I would. I really went skydiving once. It was crazy. I did it in Dubai. Before you even realize what's happening, you're basically being thrown out of the plane with someone. It was a tandem jump because I wasn't allowed to go by myself. You have to be an experienced jumper, but it was crazy and it was lots of wind on my face. But it was so much fun."
