EXCLUSIVE: Little Big Town's Meaning Behind 'Better Man'
October 20, 2016
What does it mean to be a better man? Little Big Town knows. The country band just debuted their brand new song "Better Man" across radio stations today (Oct. 20), and it's the first taste of music from their forthcoming new album, which they've been working on this year (in between winning two Grammy Awards, being honored as the 2016 Music Business Association Artist of the Year, and hitting the road with Luke Bryan on his "Kill The Lights Tour").
"Better Man" boasts a slower rhythm, and showcases Karen Fairchild's powerhouse vocals as she belts out heartfelt lyrics that many fans will definitely be able to relate to. And the band says of the harmony, "It's a very simple harmony but it's country and warm, and it feels good, and it's fun to sing."
We recently caught up with Little Big Town, and the group told us all about their new song during an exclusive interview.
The band was drawn to "Better Man" partly because of the melody and harmony, but also because of its message. LBT says that Country songs are the best at storytelling (of heartbreak especially), and when they heard "Better Man," they instantly felt a connection to it.
On the meaning behind the lyrics for their new song "Better Man"
"Everybody can identify with the sentiment of this song. A lot of times in life, there are things that you have to walk away from that don't necessarily feel like the greatest decision to have to make in your life, but sometimes you just know that it's time to move on, and no matter how hard that is, you just know down in your heart that it's time to do that. And those are very difficult decisions that we face sometimes in our lives, and I think this song talks about that beautifully."
Little Big Town has been working on a brand new album to followup June's Wanderlust, and "Better Man" is the first single from the forthcoming project. The group says that, for them, it was a natural selection for a first single. "The melody itself was just so singable, I think for us, we couldn't get it out of our heads, and we thought this has to be first. It's Little Big Town, it's our harmonies and its melodies, just beautiful."
On how "Better Man" fits with their forthcoming new album
"Every project has personality, every record has personality, and this one, we've [had] this stack of songs that we've been working on for a long time, and we've been fortunate enough to have a lot of great writers send us incredible songs, and also, to write with them, and collaborate [with]. So getting back in the studio, it's always like, what do you lead the record with? What do you come out with as a first song? We had several songs in the running for that, but then as soon as we recorded 'Better Man', we knew that it should be first. Storytelling, harmony, beautiful memorable melody, and one that I think you can't get out of your head."
