INTERVIEW: AJR On The Meaning Behind Their New Single 'Weak'

Everybody has their weaknesses in life -- it's what makes us all human. And that is the idea behind indie pop trio AJR's new single "Weak." The song comes from their EP What Everyone's Thinking, released in September 2016, and follows their previous single "I'm Not Famous." "Weak," which hit. No. 7 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart, was released along with its lyric video that has since amassed over 3 million views.
AJR, which consists of brothers, Adam, Jack and Ryan Met, is now out on their own headlining "What Everyone's Thinking Tour," which makes stops in cities across the U.S., including Washington DC, Salt Like City, Park City, and their native New York City, among others. "We started off street performing, so we're from that world where you are performing for a lot of strangers. Now it's crazy to see that almost half the venues are sold out," the band tells us.
We recently caught up with the sibling trio in Los Angeles, and during an exclusive interview, they told us about the meaning behind their single "Weak," and the temptations that they can't help but give in to.
On what the lyrics mean for their new single "Weak"
"We had a very interesting process for that song. For this EP, we were thinking, 'What's something that no one has ever said in music before?' We hear so many songs on the radio about being confident, and how confident I am, and how happy I am, but sometimes that's just not very true. Sometimes we're weak people and we give into temptation, and what's wrong with that? Maybe it's a good thing at times. So, we thought we'd write a song about that, and it seems like people are connecting to it."
Playing off of their new song, we asked each of the guys what temptations they give into when they are 'Weak' and can't say no. You may just find yourself relating to all of these.
On what makes Adam, Ryan and Jack "Weak"
Adam: "Sweets, candy. I love gummy bears."
Ryan: "I know what yours [Jack's] is. Going out. Like whenever a friend asks you [Jack] to come out, and hang out. You're always out."
Jack: "Totally. I'm always there."
Ryan: "I know what mine is, T.V. Just like non-stop Netflix. 'The Office,' mostly."
