Metallica brought back the pop-up store for its WorldWired Tour 2017 with a grand opening in New York City the weekend of the band's much-anticipated MetLife Stadium Concert. The group has announced pop-ups that coincide with select cities they stop at during the North American portion of their tour this year.
The New York City location, which was open for three days leading up to the band's massive East Rutherford, NJ, concert drew lines around the block on its opening day.
After arriving inside the store through the appropriately labelled "Enter Night" door, customers were entertained by an industrial-looking space adorned with posters and flags from Metallica fan clubs all over the world. A Metallica playlist thrashed above the space's dull roar as fans perused all manner of Metallica merchandise.
The store was fully stocked with T-shirts, hats, CDs, vinyl albums, posters, flags, skate decks and more, with a number of novelty items, including Metallica-branded coffee and travel mugs, beverage koozies, coolers (for the blackest of picnics) and even jet-black Frisbees, which may be the most-loseable toy off all-time.
Collectors were pleasantly surprised by several autographed items and limited-edition Live Metallica: Webster Hall in New York, NY - September 27, 2016 vinyl, as well as vintage apparel by Made Worn that included reproductions and re-imaginations of the band's early merchandise, including a Master of Puppets denim jacket priced at $800!
But while the store contained a few big ticket items, for the most part, everything was priced to sell. The aforementioned Live Metallica vinyl, of which only 5,000 copies were pressed, was only $25. Most T-shirts were priced at $30, which is $10 - $15 less than what fans would pay at the concert Sunday evening.
