Joseph Gordon-Levitt Comments On '(500) Days of Summer' Debate

It's been almost a decade since 500 Days of Summer premiered. The film is "not a love story," but rather, "a story about love," according to its tagline. It follows Tom, a greeting-card writer, who is caught off guard when his girlfriend, Summer, dumps him. The story is told out of order, jumping around in the timeline of the 500 days Tom and Summer spent together. Tom attempts to figure out where the relationship went wrong, tries to get Summer back, and ultimately finds peace after their separation.

Many fans of the film often debate whether Tom or Summer was in the wrong for how their relationship played out. Even now, ten years later, people are still talking about whether they are #TeamTom or #TeamSummer. Somebody recently tweeted about the film, writing that they "still haven't forgiven Zooey Deschanel for what she did to Jospeh Gordon-Levitt in 500 Days of Summer."

It's highly unlikely they thought Gordon-Levitt would actually respond to their tweet, but he sure did and his comments about the film might surprise you. "Watch it again. It's mostly Tom's fault. He's projecting. He's not listening. He's selfish. Luckily he grows by the end."

This isn't the first time Gordon-Levitt has spoken about his opinions of his character. When speaking with Playboy in 2012, the 37-year-old actor said he thinks Tom actually has a really bad attitude.  “The ‘(500) Days of Summer’ attitude of ‘He wants you so bad’ seems attractive to some women and men, especially younger ones,” he explained. “But I would encourage anyone who has a crush on my character to watch it again and examine how selfish he is.”

While Gordon-Levitt really likes 500 Days of Summer, he definitely thinks the film's storyline was not interpreted correctly by audiences. “A part of the movie that’s less talked about is that once Zooey’s character dumps the guy, he builds himself up without the crutch of a fantasy relationship, and he meets a new girl."

Following Gordon-Levitt's orders and rewatching this movie ASAP!
