On Friday (September 7), Everlast released his eighth studio album, Whitey Ford's House of Pain. The 15-track collection marks the former House of Pain frontman's first solo album in five years.
To celebrate Everlast's new album, we passed the mic over to the rapper/singer/songwriter to curate his own Guest DJ station on iHeartRadio, and he even shared some of his favorite songs for fans to listen to.
On Everlast's Guest DJ station on iHeartRadio, fans can not only hear songs from White Ford's House of Pain, they can also listen to some of 49-year-old rapper rocker's favorite artists like Cypress Hill, Frank Sinatra, Prince, Lauryn Hill, Talking Heads, A$AP Ferg, and more.
Fans can also hear Everlast talk about some of his favorite songs by other artists and on his new album. Read on for some of the highlights below.
Cypress Hill - "Hand on the Pump"
"'Hand On The Pump'? Well, that's just the crew, you know? That's Soul Assassins all day, Cypress Hill. These are my brothers. They've been around as long as I have and in my opinion, humbly, this might be my favorite and their best song."
Everlast - "It Ain't Easy"
"'It Ain't Easy' I actually wound up going down to Nashville and writin' out with a couple guys — Luke Laird, and I'm sorry, I can't remember the other guy's name, he was so quiet the whole time. But yeah, I was down there tryin' to get involved in song writing for other people and wrote a few songs here and there, and it was originally intended to shop for other people. And after living with it for a while I just realized it was mine and I had to keep it, and use it myself."
Sublime - "What I Got"
"Sublime kind of inspired parts of what I did post-House of Pain. The tone — the acoustic with kind of funky hip hop beats — it really appealed to me. That song in particular is something I drew a lot of inspiration from, so much so that I almost didn't call 'What It's Like,' 'What It's Like,' because I thought it was a lot like, 'What I Got,' but then, like, after comparing them and realizing, okay, they're different songs, it's okay, but I will admit fully that in my brain, this was a huge inspiration on me and the style I started taking on. Not the reggae stuff, but just like an acoustic-y, hip hoppy beat thing. That's what got me venturing in there."
Everlast - "Summer Rain"
"'Summer Rain' might be the foundation of the record for me. Like a centerpiece almost. A song that uses everything I got in the toolbox — from hip hop to singer songwriter stuff. Everything I've learned in between kind of all falls into this song about drug addiction, a few people I've known, and their paths, and what they've took, and where they've wound up. It's a real special song to me."
Frank Sinatra - "It Was A Very Good Year"
"All right, let's break it up here a little bit and slow it down. Get old school. A little Frank Sinatra."
