Shawn Mendes Awkwardly Asked About Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber

Nobody likes talking about their ex, especially when a complete stranger is the one who brings up the past relationship. This exact scenario went down on Saturday at the Global Citizen Festival red carpet when a reporter asked Shawn Mendes if he'd be singing at Hailey Baldwin's wedding to Justin Bieber. Cringe!

Shawn handled the awkward situation as gracefully as possible, of course. "Am I going to sing at the wedding?" he asked, repeating the reporter's question, clearly a little surprised by it. "Of course I would sing. I’m not invited yet, but I’m sure something will happen soon." You can watch the full exchange below:

Shawn attended the Met Ball with Hailey just a month before she rekindled her on-again-off-again relationship with Justin. Once Baldwin got back together with her now-husband, she deleted all traces of her rumored relationship with Shawn from her Instagram. Shawn, on the other hand, has left all his pictures with Hailey-from the Met Ball and other occasions-up on his page.

Of course, Shawn and Hailey never confirmed they were together, though, rumors persisted for quite some time. When asked about his Met Ball date, Shawn downplayed their connection. "Obviously, Hailey and I are friends, and it was just really cool for me to be able to walk with her because she’s a vet and it was my first year, so it kind of took the pressure off a little bit,” he said. “I was thrilled to be able to go with her."

Hailey also downplayed their romance rumors when asked if the two were dating after being spotted getting cozy on multiple occasions. "We hang out and he's super-lovely and a very, very nice young gentleman," the model said. "But I am single."

While getting asked about your (rumored) ex during an interview is super uncomfortable, Shawn always insists that things are cool between him and Hailey...even though he was purged from her Instagram account, the ultimate sign of a bad breakup.

"I texted Hailey the day of, and I said congrats," Shawn said following the engagement. "That's what it is. I think everybody wants there to be more — there's not.
