John Robb has interviewed some of the greatest names in rock, and in a new series called The John Robb Tapes the acclaimed music journalist is unearthing gems from the incredible archive he's amassed throughout the years. For its first episode, Robb talks to Nirvana in a "hot claustrophobic flat in New York City" after the band had finished playing to 10 people at Maxwell's, Hoboken.
The 20-minute interview covers a lot of ground, including Kurt Cobain talking about a new song he had just written that may or may not have ended up being "Smells Like Teen Spirit," but the Seattle-based band also spends some time discussing their fellow Seattleites: Soundgarden. Namely the long hair phenomenon of the '80s, Chris Cornell's iconic locks, and how they wanted nothing to do with it.
“We’re definitely not jumping on the bandwagon," Cobain declared.
“Hair is weird. I was reading in some magazine that says, ‘This long haired band is the next Soundgarden. Most of them have long hair,’" bassist Krist Novoselic added. "It’s weird. I put this record on, hmmmm, they have a lot of hair!”
Cobain then hashed a plan to make sure Nirvana didn't get meshed together with the long hair bands of Seattle.
“Maybe we’ll have to make sure you be the token punk rocker and get it short, you’ll have it really long, I’ll have it at the Mudhoney cut off half length, and one will get a mohawk," he said.
