10% of Iowa teens have suicide plan, others smoke and drink SURVEY

DES MOINES, Iowa - 10-percent of Iowa teens say they have a plan for suicide, in a new survey by the Iowa Department of Public Health. One-percent say they needed medical treatment for an attempt.

The Iowa Department of Health started the survey in 1975, and asks various questions of students in 6th, 8th, and 11th grades.

Some of the other notable responses include: 56-percent of teens say they drink, 68-percent say they smoke.

The teens also have some very positive responses. 66-percent say it's very important to help other people, and 51-percent say it's important to care about other peoples' feelings.
