Even though Patrick Dempsey is no longer on Grey's Anatomy, his character on the long running medical drama, Dr. Derek Shepard aka McDreamy, remains a fan favorite. It's hard to imagine anybody other than Dempsey bringing McDream to life, but it turns out the role was originally offered to another famous actor: Rob Lowe.

During a recent interview with comedian Marc Maron, Lowe made the big reveal. “Dude, I turned down Grey’s Anatomy … to play McDreamy,” the actor said. “That probably cost me $70 million dollars! But at the end of the day, I watched it when it came out, and when they started calling the handsome doctor ‘McDreamy,’ I said, ‘Yeah, that’s not for me.’”

It would've been different, but I can kind of see Lowe as McDreamy. What do you think?

Things, of course, worked out for the best. Dempsey starred as McDreamy for 10 seasons of Grey's Anatomy, while Lowe brought the memorable Chris Traiger to life on the beloved sitcom Parks and Recreation. Who knows...maybe Lowe will eventually make a cameo as McDreamy's long lost brother on Grey's Anatomy one day? Fingers crossed!
