Mariah Carey was more than happy to pass the torch to Lil Nas X after the 20-year-old broke her chart record this week.
On Monday (July 29), the cowboy rapper's mega hit "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, became the longest-running Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single of all-time, a title the Elusive Chanteuse and Boyz II Men have held together for more than two decades. Like a true queen, Carey sent a sweet message to congratulate her heir's history-making moment on Twitter.
"Sending love & congrats to @LilNasX on breaking one of the longest running records in music history!" the powerhouse tweeted along with an actual image of her handing the torch to Nas X. "We've been blessed to hold this record with a song that means a great deal to @BoyzIIMen and myself and has touched so many. Keep living your best life!"
Before "Old Town Road" reached its seventeenth week atop the Hot 100, Carey and the R&B group carried the torch since 1995 for their timeless duet "One Sweet Day." The classic collaboration went on to spend 16 weeks on the chart, making it the Hot 100's longest-running number-one track until Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's smash record "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber, tied with "One Sweet Day" in 2017.
Apart from his latest chart accomplishment, the country emcee not only has the longest-running hip-hop song in the chart's history, but he is the first and only artist to come out as gay while having a number-one hit as well.
Congrats, Lil Nas X — keep doing your thing!
