Grant Thompson, the creator of the YouTube series King of Random, has died at the age of 38.
According to TMZ, Grant’s brother, Mark, told the celebrity news outlet his brother had gone paragliding on Monday evening (July 29) but did not return home. The following day, authorities informed Mark they’d discovered Grant’s body.
The Thompson family, who is still receiving knowledge of what actually happened to Grant, broke the heartbreaking news in a tribute on the King of Random YouTube page.
“It is with great sadness to inform everyone that Grant Thompson passed away last night,” reads a statement shared with a memorial video. “Grant had great love and appreciation for his fans. We invite you to share your thoughts for Grant and the channel in the comments. Please do a random act of love or kindness today in honor of The King of Random. Grant’s legacy will live on in the channel and the global community he created."
According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, a massive search ensued for an “overdue paraglider” after the caller was unable to reach Grant by cellphone an hour after his expected return. Before his disappearance, Grant was said to have gone “off the radar” near Sand Hollow State Park. By tracking Grant’s GPS coordinates, a helicopter was used to locate and recover his body that same night.
At this time, WCSO detectives are reviewing “a video recording device” found at the crash site along with Grant’s paragliding equipment to determine how he died.
Since 2010, Grant began documenting his experiments, life hacks and weekend projects on his YouTube channel. With over 11 million subscribers, the King of Random was the 32nd most-followed channel on the platform.
Rest in Peace, Grant
