Josh Lucas would totally be down for doing Sweet Home Alabama 2, so he has his fingers crossed that co-star Reese Witherspoon will finally make the call.

“I’m up for it. I know Reese’s said she is as well,” Lucas dished to Entertainment Tonight at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual grants banquet on Wednesday (July 31). “The director [Andy Tennant] is absolutely up for it. I spoke to him about it a couple of times recently. So look, I throw it out to you, Reese. I think the person who’s the one to put it together is Reese, so I’m hoping. Who knows? She’s got a lot of irons in the fire to say the least. Hopefully this is one of them.”

It’s been nearly 20 years since Lucas and Witherspoon starred as childhood sweethearts Melanie and Jake in the 2002 Southern rom-com. In case you didn’t know, this isn’t the first time the movie has been in talks for a second chapter.

The leading lady herself expressed an interest in revisiting Melanie’s life in a potential follow-up back in 2016. “We are not making a sequel that I know of, but if Disney wants to make a sequel they can just call me. I would happily make Sweet Home Alabama 2,” the 43-year-old said in a Facebook Live Q&A.

In April, Lucas teased a potential storyline proposed by Tennant, which involves Jake being “back in Alabama and Reese’s character is in New York with our kids and we’re divorced, so [their] whole life is super complicated,” jokingly adding that, yes, “Patrick Dempsey‘s character is still in the picture.”
