After 40 years, the epic Skywalker saga is coming to an end. The highly anticipated Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which is the ninth and final film in this unique trilogy of trilogies, flies into theaters on Friday (December 20).
As we prepare to say goodbye to beloved characters, both old and new, from a galaxy far, far away, let's take a look back at every live action Star Wars film, including Rogue One and Solo. While everyone has their personal favorite, there's no denying some Star Wars films received more favorable critical reviews than others. According to Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer, this is how all 11 films rank from the lowest score to the highest, as well as what the critics had to say about each one:
11) Phantom Menace - 53%
Burdened by exposition and populated with stock characters, The Phantom Menace gets the Star Wars prequels off to a bumpy -- albeit visually dazzling -- start.
10) The Rise of Skywalker - 59%
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker suffers from a frustrating lack of imagination, but concludes this beloved saga with fan-focused devotion.
9) Attack of the Clones - 65%
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones benefits from an increased emphasis on thrilling action, although they're once again undercut by ponderous plot points and underdeveloped characters.
8) Solo - 70%
A flawed yet fun and fast-paced space adventure, Solo: A Star Wars Story should satisfy newcomers to the saga as well as longtime fans who check their expectations at the theater door.
7) Revenge of the Sith - 80%
With Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas brings his second Star Wars trilogy to a suitably thrilling and often poignant -- if still a bit uneven -- conclusion.
6) Return of the Jedi - 82%
"Though failing to reach the cinematic heights of its predecessors, Return of the Jedi remains an entertaining sci-fi adventure and a fitting end to the classic trilogy."
5) Rogue One - 83%
Rogue One draws deep on Star Wars mythology while breaking new narrative and aesthetic ground -- and suggesting a bright blockbuster future for the franchise.
4) The Last Jedi - 91%
Star Wars: The Last Jedi honors the saga's rich legacy while adding some surprising twists -- and delivering all the emotion-rich action fans could hope for.
3) A New Hope - 93%
A legendarily expansive and ambitious start to the sci-fi saga, George Lucas opened our eyes to the possibilities of blockbuster filmmaking and things have never been the same.
2) Force Awakens - 93%
Packed with action and populated by both familiar faces and fresh blood, The Force Awakens successfully recalls the series' former glory while injecting it with renewed energy.
1) Empire Strikes Back - 94%
Dark, sinister, but ultimately even more involving than A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back defies viewer expectations and takes the series to heightened emotional levels.
Whether you're pro Ewok or Team Reylo, there's always something to discuss about the Star Wars universe. What do you think about this Rotten Tomatoes ranking - do the critics get it right?
