Taylor Swift's highly-anticipated Miss Americana documentary has hit Netflix and it has arrived alongside a brand-new song called "Only The Young,"
Clocking in at almost three-minutes, the airy track, which already has its own lyric video, is an optimistic anthem that touches on the pop titan's hope for change. Self-produced, alongside Joel Little, "Only The Young" is short, sweet and effective, matching the sonics of her latest album, Lover. Not only does she make lyrical references to Election Night 2016 and America's school shooting epidemic, but she gathers a children's choir, more specifically Little's two daughters, to really drive home the latter.
"So every day now/ You brace for the sound/ You've only heard on TV/You go to class, scared/ Wondering where the best hiding spot would be/ And the big bad man and his big bad clan/ Their hands are stained with red," she croons on the second verse.
Speaking with Variety, Swift revealed that she wrote the track after the 2018 midterm elections after seeing so many young people rally for their preferred candidate. "It was hard to see so many people feel like they had canvassed and done everything and tried so hard," she admitted to the outlet. "I saw a lot of young people’s hopes dashed. And I found that to be particularly tragic, because young people are the people who feel the worst effects of gun violence, and student loans and trying to figure out how to start their lives and how to pay their bills, and climate change, and are we going to war — all these horrific situations that we find ourselves facing right now."
You can hear more of Swift's political awakening in her just-released doc, which is currently available on the streaming platform and in select theaters across the country. For a limited time, you can watch the film in nearly two dozen venues in Austin, New York, Phoenix and San Antonio, Dallas, El Paso, Los Angeles, San Francisco and London. The project, which was directed by Emmy winner Lana Wilson and produced by Academy Award winner Morgan Nevill, is in collaboration with Tremolo Production. Among the other production credits for the film include Academy Award winner Caitrin Rogers and Christine O’Malle.
