Katie Holmes Recalls 'Intense' Aftermath Of Tom Cruise Divorce

Katie Holmes is opening up about her split from ex-husband Tom Cruise.

The notoriously private actress graces the cover of InStyle's April 2020 issue. In the accompanying interview, Holmes gets candid about the aftermath of her extremely public divorce. “That time was intense,” she said. “It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it. [Suri and I] had some funny moments out and about in public.”

Though Holmes didn't speak about her daughter's relationship with Cruise—they are believed to be completely estranged—she did tell InStyle about how special 13-year-old Suri is. Holmes told the magazine that she hopes to “nurture her into her individuality.”

“[I want] to make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident, and able," Holmes continued. "And to know it. She came out very strong — she’s always been a strong personality. She’ll pick an activity and work her butt off until she’s really good at it. Then she’s like, ‘OK, I’m going to try the next thing.’ She’s very focused and a hard worker.”

Suri is “pretty special,” her mom raved. Now that Suri is a little bit older, too, Holmes revealed she's able to focus more on her career. “I feel like I can be more creative and have more time, have my voice,” Holmes said. “It’s sort of, like, just put your stuff out there and be yourself. It takes a while to be comfortable, though.”
