Fans of The Office know all about the teapot note. If you're more of a casual fan than the streamed all nine seasons on Netflix multiple times kind of fan, you may need a refresher. Back in season 2 during the "Christmas Party" episode, Jim confessed his feelings to Pam in a note he then placed in a teapot he got her for Christmas. After getting cold feet, Jim steals the note back before Pam is able to see it. The note was never mentioned again until the show's final season when Pam reads it in the penultimate episode.
Even though Pam finally got to read Jim's note, viewers were never clued in about the notes' contents. In an episode of her Office Ladies podcast last month, Jenna Fischer—who played Pam on The Office—discussed the note with her co-host Angela Kinsey. “I’m the only one who knows, and John knows,” Fischer said. It turns out, the card was blank back in season two. When the creative team decided to bring it back for the penultimate episode, they had John Krasinski—who played Jim on The Office—write a personal note to Fischer, which they then used in the emotional scene.
“In that episode in season nine, I believe [The Office writer and producer] Greg [Daniels] suggested to John that he write a personal message from himself to me just saying what our time together on The Office meant to him,” the actress explained, getting emotional while she spoke. “We were wrapping up the series, and we were all so emotional at that time. And so, that was his goodbye."
"It was the sweetest note. And you know on camera, Pam says, 'I'll never say what it said, but just know it was perfect,'" she added. "Well, I'll never say what John wrote, but I will say, just know it was perfect."
In a recent interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan, Krasinski was also asked about the teapot note by the hosts. Like Fischer, Krasinski declined to reveal what the special note said. “I just wrote it and she read it the first time on camera," he said. "So it was a really personal thing just for her. That’s just for her.” Krasinski did acknowledge that he nows the mystery will be hard for fans who are dying to know what he wrote. “Everyone’s like ‘Awwww, seriously though, what did it say? WHAT DID IT SAY!”
It looks like we'll never know, but at least we know it was—as both Pam and the actress her brought her to life for 9 season would say— perfect.
