Last May, Amy Schumer and husband Chris Fischer welcomed their first child together. Schumer shared the news with her followers on Instagram, revealing she named her baby boy Gene Attell Fischer. She also added that her son's middle name had a special meaning—it was a sweet nod to Schumer's close friend and fellow comedian Dave Attell.

Not longer after she shared her exciting news, however, Schumer's followers began to point out that her son's name sounded like the word 'genital.' Others assumed Schumer was joking and hadn't released her son's real name publicly and was just trolling everybody. The name was real, though, and Schumer and Fischer didn't comment on the speculation until now. Almost a year after Schumer welcomed Gene into the world, she revealed she legally changed his middle name.

“So do you guys know that Gene, our baby’s name is officially changed? It’s now Gene David Fischer,” Schumer said in a recent podcast appearance. “It was Gene Attell Fischer, but we realized that we by accident named our son ‘genital.’" Schumer also shared that she and her husband also realized Gene's last name, Fischer, made her son’s full name sound like “genital fissure.”

Schumer's longtime friend Claudia O'Doherty chimed in by telling the comedian that even her mom noticed what Gene's name sounded like. “My mom pointed that out to me actually,”she said. “My mom was like, ‘Amy’s called her son ‘genital.’ And I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And then, she was right.”

Gene's new middle name still honors Schumer's friend, as well as her father now. His middle name is David, too, so now Gene and his grandpa share a middle name.
