Rumors of a third Princess Diaries movie have been circulating for a while now. While Anne Hathaway has stated she's down to revive her role as Mia Thermopolis on a few occasions, Julie Andrews has been less forthcoming about whether or not she'd want to return to Genovia. In a new interview with The Talk @ Home, though, the prolific actress hinted she may be interested if filming can get started ASAP.
“It’s long been talked about but nothing has sort of been on my desk or anything like that," she said when asked about a potential third installment. "I think I would. I’m getting awfully old and crotchety. I’m not sure if it’s the right timing, but I think to work with Annie would be lovely again. And yeah, sure I would be up for it. I think we should wait if the script comes in, just wait for that.”
The second Princess Diaries movie premiered back in 2004 and saw Mia preparing for her royal wedding. As fans will remember, Mia ends up walking away from the altar on her wedding day and her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, marries her longtime driver and bodyguard Joe instead.
Few details about the potential third movie are currently known, though Hathaway confirmed in January 2019 that a script had already been completed. That was news for Andrews, however, because when she was asked about the script on an episode of Watch What Happens Live she was surprised to hear a script even existed. “I haven’t heard," she said at the time. "There’s been talk about it for quite a while. I think [Hathaway’s] having a second child. She’s busy and I’ve been busy. If it happens, it would be lovely, and if it doesn’t, I wouldn’t have known about so there you go."
We'll just have to wait and see if Princess Diaries 3 really does ever happen.
