Scrubs star Sam Lloyd has died. He was 56.

The actor, beloved for his role as lawyer Ted Buckland on the hit television series, died Thursday (April 30) after battling an inoperable brain tumor and metastatic lung cancer with which he was diagnosed in January 2019. The disease subsequently spread to Lloyd’s lungs, liver, spine, and jaw bone just weeks after his wife, Vanessa, gave birth to the couple’s first child, son Weston.

A graduate of Syracuse University, Lloyd was best known for his work on the comedy-drama Scrubs, starring in 95 episodes of the show in its run. Lloyd’s other acting credits include Seinfeld, Desperate Housewives, Cougar Town, Flubber, Modern Family, Bones, and many other film and television projects. Apart from acting, Lloyd moonlighted as an a capella singer and musician.

The news of the cherished star’s death struck a chord with Lloyd’s fans and former castmates on social media, including with Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence and co-star Zach Braff, who each paid the late performer a tribute in light of his passing.

“Thinking a lot about Sam Lloyd today,” Lawrence tweeted with a picture of the stars on set. “Truly such a kind, sweet guy. He will be missed by so many.”

Along with a nostalgic video of Lloyd and his a cappella group performing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” Braff added, “Rest In Peace to one of the funniest actors I’ve ever had the joy of working with. Sam Lloyd made me crack up and break character every single time we did a scene together. He could not have been a kinder man. I will forever cherish the time I had with you, Sammy.”
