Even though the Met Gala has been postponed, that doesn't mean that the "Oscars of fashion" cannot be celebrated. Later on this evening, an online streaming event titled A Moment With the Met promises to deliver an address from the one and only Anna Wintour, as well as a live performance by Florence + the Machine. In addition to the online Vogue festivities, iHeartRadio is celebrating the would-be fashion event of the year with a look back at some of the most talked about outfits straight from the stars themselves. Scroll on below to see what titans like Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and more had to say about their past looks!
1. Kim Kardashian (2013)
"I was very pregnant, very puffy and bloated and I was like, 'Oh God, of course the first time I go, I'm gonna be huge.' Kanye [West] was performing, so I wasn’t actually invited. I was just Kanye’s plus one and that was OK with me 'cause I never really dreamed I would be at the Met Ball. I know no one really probably wanted me there at the time...Ricardo [Tisci] was dressing me because he was dressing Kanye. We chose a really stretchy fabric because I would be growing and we wanted to make sure that alterations were easy and it was comfortable. We had a black version of this and then the floral version of this. I was like, 'I think I should just do the black version' and Riccardo was like, 'No, c'mon. We have to do the floral.' Riccardo said afterwards, 'What do you give a woman when she's pregnant? You send her flowers.' It was such a sweet message of how Ricardo described it.
But I was so insecure. I could never really speak up at that point 'cause I so shy and just wanted to make everybody happy. He said Anna [Wintour] really wanted the floral. On the car ride there, I remember Kanye saying, 'You look so beautiful. I'm so happy for you.' He was so happy. I was crying the whole way home because I just couldn't believe it. There were all these memes about me and this couch. I think Robin Williams even tweeted it, said I looked like Mrs. Doubtfire. It was this whole thing. I was crying the whole way home because I just couldn’t believe it and now I love it. Now, it's like sick. I look back and I'm like, 'They had the vision.'" - Vogue
2. Rihanna (2015)
"I did [get out of a car for that one]. I had to choreograph. I got a stretch limo, girls. I put the garment, the omelet, in the car first. Then I had to put it on in the car, but the train had to come out first, so that I wasn't dragging it out. It was all choreographed. I can't lift that thing by myself. I certainly can’t get out of the car and up stairs. Six people helped me carry it." - The Graham Norton Show
3. Selena Gomez (2018)
"I fixed [my tan] since the Met Gala." - Instagram
4. ZAYN (2016)
"I had seen a few people hitting me online, saying negative things about it. But I enjoyed it because they were saying I looked like a dude from Mortal Kombat, and it was actually based on a character (from the video game series), called Jax. He had metal arms, and the theme was technology, so I just took it from him... It's a bit easy to just dress up in a suit. I like to do things that are a bit outside of that." - Dazed
5. Victoria Beckham (2006)
"This is me wearing a Roland Murray dress. The jewelry is incredible and I can't remember where the jewelry is from. I think it was probably Shepherd. Lots of corsetry going on, about two corsets with this dress. At the time, I obviously thought it was the right thing to do to wear [a] red dress, red shoes, red lips. It's quite matchy, matchy. This reminds me of a little bit of Mary Poppins dress. It felt incredible. It was beautifully made. I actually bought it in a sample sale. I went to a Roland Murray sample sale and that's where I bought it from." - Vogue
6. Lupita Nyong'o (2014)
"They made me two other gowns to try on and this had been a sketch, an early sketch that they’d sent. Me and Mikalah [Erlanger] nixed it because we didn’t understand it. We nixed it. They made the other two dresses, but they very strategically put this gown on a mannequin in the fitting room. It was the first thing I saw when I walked into the fitting room. I walked in and it was standing there and I go, ‘Oh my God. What’s that?’ I proceeded to go and try on my other dresses. They were nice and then I turned around and was like, ‘Who’s wearing that one?’ They just had this coy smile on their face and they were like, ‘We kind of made that one for you.’ I tried it on and I was like, ‘Well, obviously, it’s is.’ It was just so fun. We call it the taxi dress and it was a lot of fun to wear. It made a lot of noise. All the Prada girls that year had the beading, so when we were walking down, we heard [the noise] of us coming." - Vanity Fair
7. Salma Hayek (2019)
"This is Gucci. I have to confess. I like to wear the crowns. I love to put something in my hair. I'm so glad that now Gucci and other designers are embracing jewelry on the head. I love to decorate the head. Maybe it rubbed off from Frida, you know, who loved it so much. Why not? Why just the hands and the neck? It’s nice to put things that are shiny and bling bling on the head. I love that look. I know I was supposed to be more camp, but now when I go to the Met, I don’t try to compete. I try to enjoy the show. I don’t want to be the star of the show. I just want to go and enjoy the show and wear clothes that I love." - Vogue
8. Tracee Ellis Ross (2017)
"This was my first time going on my own. I wore a cobalt blue Comme De Garçons piece of wearable art. Being invited to the Met Gala, it's an exclusive group, especially for a girl that's loved fashion forever and style. I worked in fashion. The Met Ball is like the Oscars of fashion. I really felt like a piece of art that night. I also did not have a lot of mobility, couldn’t really move my arms. There were three poses I could do for the cameras, which was head in, head out, and arms out, arms in. That was it. That’s all I could do. Walking those steps is, like, very scary." - Vanity Fair
9. Troye Sivan (2018)
"The theme was Heavenly Bodies and I’m wearing some custom Valentino. I felt amazing this night. That’s another one of those nights, where it’s just like you can’t believe that it’s happening when it’s happening. It was so fun. I just felt so confident and cool. Planning a Met Gala look is like one of the funnest things I’ve ever done, to be able to kind of build a look from ground up and work with Valentino and Pierpaolo []Piccioli] on what I wanted the silhouette to be, what I wanted the color to look like, what I wanted to do with my hair and makeup and bring all that to life and feel good in it and for it to work out, was really insane." - Vanity Fair
10. Cher (2019)
"I had another outfit to wear but at the last minute, I just thought, 'F**k it. I don't want to wear anything.' This is what I came in, except I had a big fluffy, puffy coat that my friends at Chrome Hearts made me. I've had these jeans forever. They are patched over patches, so I love them. They're not particularly attractive but I don't really care.” - Vogue
11. Zendaya (2019)
"It was this idea of paying homage to my Disney days. Obviously, we wanted it to be very camp and very over-the-top. My dress lit up. It got bigger. It opened up. It did a lot of things. We had a smoke machine. You know, real casual.” - Access
