Kehlani has returned with her sophomore album.
Friday (May 8) mark the hotly-anticipated release of the Oakland-born artist’s second studio album, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t.
For her follow-up to 2017’s SweetSexySavage, the songstress joins forces with an array of hip-hop and R&B’s finest players, including Tory Lanez on “Can I,” Jhene Aiko on “Change Your Life,” Lucky Daye on “Can You Blame Me,” and Masego on “Hate The Club.” The 15-song effort also features a mellow tune with singer-songwriter James Blake on “Grieving.”
Much like the symbolic artwork for the album suggests, Kehlani’s latest project raises the hard-boiled question: Is the grass any greener on the other side? The songbird open-heartedly conveys that curious dichotomy on IWGUIW by exploring the hot and cold rules of love, attraction, trust and desire. The outcome, as anticipated, is nothing short of emotional bliss.
Kehlani first teased her newest album back in January in a since-deleted tweet celebrating the anniversary of her debut album. “3 years since my first album, the album that healed me, the album that saved my life,” she tweeted at the time. “The album that went gold no features…2nd album otw. if you’re still here thanks for being here, sincerely 🙏🏼”
In the time that followed, Kehlani went on to unveil several singles from her long-awaited follow-up — which she confidently teased is her “best work yet” — including “Toxic,” “Everybody Business,” and “F&MU.”
Apart from the anticipation leading up to IWGUIW’s release, the 25-year-old garnered some extra buzz in the interim with features on Justin Bieber’s Changes track “Get Me” and “Hit My Phone” with Megan Thee Stallion, who also receives a nod on Kehlani’s “Real Hot Girl Skit.”
