In a new interview with Closer magazine, Princess Diana's former butler and close confidante Paul Burrell revealed that there's one important reason Prince Harry fell for Meghan Markle. According to Burrell, the Duchess of Sussex's personality is quite similar to that of her husband's late mother. "Harry went for and married Meghan because she's like Diana," Burrell shared. "Both women who would always stand up for what they believe in and wouldn't be pushovers."
Despite their similarities, though, Burrell believes this might have meant that the women would have butted heads from time to time if they had the chance to get to know each other. "I think, possibly, they would have clashed," he explained. "I imagine it would have been two strong, independent women with different views on things—it would have been a battle between Meghan's way and Diana's way."
The main difference between Meghan and Diana, according to Burrell, is that Meghan was much more experienced with the tabloids when she joined the Royal Family. "I think the main difference between them is that Meghan has a game plan, whereas Diana was young and naïve," Burell continued. "Diana did the book with Andrew Morton and courted the press over the years because she didn't have a voice. And her strong-mindedness meant she cared and she felt the people of the country had a right to know what had gone on behind closed doors."
Though Burrell believes Meghan and Diana may have clashed, Harry has often spoken about how he believes his mother and wife would have gotten along swimmingly. In their first joint interview, which took place shortly after announcing their engagement, Harry told BBC News "they’d be thick as thieves, without question.” Not only that, but his mom would have been "over the moon, jumping up and down, you know so excited for me. But then, as I said, would have probably been best — best friends with Meghan.”
