Halsey took to Twitter on Tuesday (June 23) to open up about her dad's experience with racism and classism while going out to eat.
Her story materialized after footage of a Baltimore, Maryland restaurant manager refused to service a Black family because the young boy was wearing athletic shorts — meanwhile a white child dining at the restaurant is seen in the video wearing the same type of shorts.
“Restaurant in Hollywood tried this s*** on my dad for 30 minutes cause he had chino shorts on,” she wrote on Twitter. “Tried to tell my linebacker looking a** dad to go to an urban. outfitters. and buy some pants.”
She ended her story writing, “Same restaurant I’ve seen 100 white youtubers wear shorts inside of. I haaaate this s***.”
Fans flooded her replies asking the singer to drop the name of the Hollywood eatery so that it can be boycotted and called out for its discrimination. At the time of publishing, Halsey has not yet revealed the establishment's name.
The “You should be sad” singer recently opened up online about being a white passing woman of color thus not being subjected to the same kind of discrimination and racism that darker skinned people face. “I am in pain for my family, but nobody is gonna kill me based on my skin color,” she said at the time.
Halsey has also just announced the first wave of recipients of her “Black Creators Funding Initiative” to help amplify the work of Black creators: FREDDIE, Asata, and Sanni Kehinde.
Anyone interested in being part of the initiative can use the hashtag #BLACKCREATORSFUND to show Halsey their work on Instagram and Twitter and non-Black people can use the hashtag to tag their favorite Black creators.
