Jake Johnson Thinks A 'New Girl' Reunion Will Definitely Happen

Jake Johnson doesn't think we've seen the last of Nick Miller and the rest of the New Girl gang.
During a recent interview to promote his new animated comedy series Hoops, Johnson talked about New Girl's rise in popularity as new fans began binge-watching the FOX sitcom on Netflix during the pandemic. Despite being happy the show is finding new viewers after coming to an end in 2018, Johnson discussed the "bittersweet" nature of the situation, as well. "When we were going away, Fox was being pretty cool and saying like, 'We don't want to cancel you, but nobody's watching,'" Johnson explained. "So when we did our final season, Zooey Deschanel and I literally wrote an email to the heads asking for more, for the few OG fans who stayed with us. You can't end the way season six ended where it was rushed. I was like, 'Give [creator] Liz Meriwether the time to finish this right!'"
Though Johnson and Deschanel successfully secured the show a seventh season, ratings remained low for the final run of episodes. New Girl came to an end without much pomp and circumstance. While the cast of many other popular sitcoms, such as Parks and Recreation, were invited to do late night interviews together to promote the finale, the cast of New Girl never received any offers like that due to the show's low ratings."Nobody asked us to be on any show!" he said. "So now that there's people following [New Girl], I'm like, it's not like you're 10 years too late, you're 18 months! It's a little bittersweet. We were just working!"
Though the show is no longer on the air, Johnson shared that the cast has stayed in touch over the last two years and remain close. "Hannah Simone and I were texting two nights ago...Zooey and I still text," he said."The guys and I are on a text chain," he shared. "Everybody's still linked up, so I would be surprised if there's not some sort of a thing at some point where everybody comes back."
The only thing getting in the way of a New Girl reunion? The casts' busy schedule. "Lamorne [Morris] is now running his own show. He's becoming a mogul, so Lamorne...he's coming back with an arc!" Johnson said. "So Liz Meriwether would have to crack a great story, and if she does that, it would be really fun to get everybody back."
Johnson even called on some of his New Girl cast mates to guest star on Hoops. "I love the cast of New Girl," Johnson told Entertainment Weekly. "My thing is when I work with people and I like it, I like to do it again, so, for me, it’s just an opportunity to see a friend who is really talented."
Hopefully the next time the cast of New Girl gets together, they'll be back in the loft and up to their old shenanigans.
