Even though Archie Mountbatten-Windsor wasn't born a prince, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's son will inherit the royal title one day. According to a new report from Express, Archie will become a prince when his grandfather, Prince Charles, becomes king.
Despite not receiving a royal title upon birth—a decision his parents made in the hope of giving him a more private life—Archie remains seventh in line to the British throne. Once Prince Charles is on the throne, however, Archie will be even closer to the role himself. As a result, he will automatically become a prince once his grandfather is on the throne.
While Archie and his parents won't have any say in Archie eventually become a prince, he will get to choose whether or not he uses his titles when he turns 18. As of now, Archie's parents do not use their own HRH titles after stepping down from their positions within the royal family earlier this year.
Once Archie is sixth in line for the throne, he will also be subjected to the rules established by the 2013 Succession of the Crown Act. This means he will be required to ask the reigning monarch—likely his grandfather or his uncle, Prince William, will be on the throne—for permission to marry when the time comes.
Archie's cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, are also required to ask permission to wed. Should any of Archie's cousins have children before he's ready to marry, however, he would be bumped down in the line of succession once again. If that's the case, he will no longer have to seek permission from the monarch.
