As the holiday season approaches, many people have wondered how the pandemic will affect local parades and celebrations, but one New Orleans staple has already announced its plans. The city will have its annual Celebration in the Oaks this year, but rather than attendees strolling through the park, it will be a driving tour instead.
This year will be the 34th anniversary of Celebration in the Oaks, which officials call the "most spectacular holiday lights festival in the country." According to its website, the oak trees in the park are covered in over one million lights and displays will be arranged throughout the 2.5-mile driving tour.
"We know our guests need something to look forward to during this troubling time," said Bob Becker, City Park CEO. "We're thrilled to be able to turn the New Orleans tradition of Celebration in the Oaks into an activity people of all ages can attend safely during the holiday season."
According to NOLA Weekend, this year's event is the first time Celebration in the Oaks has been a driving tour since before Hurricane Katrina.
"We can't wait to see the smiles from the kids ages one to one hundred," Becker said.
Celebration in the Oaks is City Parks' largest fundraiser, with proceeds going toward maintenance, care, and beautification of City Park. Learn more about the event or purchase tickets on the event's website here.
