The Texas Department of Transportation has a new program that helps stranded drivers and it is coming to San Antonio. The program is moving into phase two and is expanding services.
The "Highway Emergency Response Operator" or HERO service first launched in August and gives free services to drivers. The program helps those who have run out of gas, gotten flat tires, need a jump-start, or even those who need to use a phone.
Phase one of the HERO program gave services to drivers Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Northern San Antonio. This was mostly on I-10, Highway 46, and I-35.
TxDOT San Antonio District Engineer Mario Jorge said, "During the first month of service, the HERO program has successfully provided assistance at approximately 1,500 incidents. We are excited to continue to improve on the success of this program that has already benefitted so many drivers."
Phase two of the program went into effect on Monday with expanded services to parts of Loop 1604, all of Loop 410, I-10 East to Loop 1604, Highway 90 to 1604, and Highway 151 to 1604.
The program will extend to 24 hour services, seven days a week in November with full service from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and limited service from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
24 hour services will be provided on Saturdays and Sundays.
