Watch Late Tom Petty's Rock Hall Induction Performance On His 70th Birthday

Tuesday (October 20) marks Tom Petty’s 70th birthday.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honored the late singing-songwriting legend by reflecting on Petty’s 2002 induction.
“Today we honor the 70th birthday anniversary of one of music's most genuine souls; Inductee @tompetty's music is emphatic and timeless,” the Rock Hall tweeted Tuesday, sharing a video of the “classic” performance of “American Girl” at the induction ceremony.
“Tom Petty made us all believe by singing about ordinary experience in an extraordinary way,” the Rock Hall states. “His vocals captured our soul with songs that sounded like hits the first time we heard them. He made his mark on music and our lives.”

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class of 2002, which included Chet Atkins, Isaac Hayes, Brenda Lee, Gene Pitney, Ramones, Jim Stewart and Talking Heads.
Petty died on October 2, 2017. He was 66.
Longtime manager of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Tony Dimitriades confirmed his death, Rolling Stone reported at the time.
“On behalf of the Tom Petty family, we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty,” Dimitriades wrote in 2017. “He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”
