Hackers may have gotten their hands on the personal information of 27.7 million Texans.

Vertafore, an insurance software company, announced this week that a third party accessed the driver's license numbers, names, birth dates, addresses, and vehicle registration histories of millions of Texans.

"Vertafore recently determined that as a result of human error, three data files were inadvertently stored in an unsecured external storage service that appears to have been accessed without authorization," the company posted on its website.

The breached files were being used for to "support a specific product within Vertafore’s insurance rating solutions," KTRK reported.

The incident happened between March 11 and August 1, and the files accesses included information on driver's licenses issued before February 2019, ZDNet reported. The company says that social security numbers and financial account information were not accessed.

On its website, Vertaforte said that there's no evidence that the leaked information has been misused.

An investigation is underway, and Vertaforte said that it would contact the people who had their information exposed.

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has set up a website (https://www.txdmv.gov/vertafore) for those who had their information exposed and how they can protect themselves from identity theft.
