Grand Prairie will soon become a prime destination for cricket fans.
The city council on Tuesday announced that Airhogs Stadium near Lone Star Park just north of Interstate 30 has been approved for renovation.
The stadium housed a minor league baseball team for nearly 10 years, but the team never really caught on with fans.
The plan is to turn the baseball field into a Major League Cricket Field.
Grand Prairie is throwing in $1.3 million for the project, with Major League Cricket throwing in at least that much as well.
The stadium's current 5,400 seating capacity will be expanded and the stadium will be renamed from Airhogs Stadium.
If everything goes according to plan, a Dallas franchise Major League Cricket should be playing in the stadium by 2022.
Grand Prairie Mayor Ron Jensen told Fox 4 News, "We did give baseball every opportunity and this is a great thing. We’ll be playing cricket out there in 2022. We feel like when they play an international team we’ll have 8,000 to 10,000 people out there."
City leaders think there is an "untapped fan base" in the area.
Jensen said, "It’s the second most popular game in the world. And, l learned how to play it today via YouTube. It’s not as complicated as you think. Can’t wait to play it myself."
