Three Massachusetts butcher shops recently ranked among the best in the nation.
Brazeau's Butcher Shop in North Adams, M.F. Dulock in Somerville and Savenor's Butcher & Market in Boston and Cambridge were each included in Food & Wine's list of the "best butcher shops and meat markets in America" on Friday.
Food & Wine's David Landsel, who wrote the article, said the the national rankings followed the criteria of: "the more sustainable, the more rebellious against the prevailing winds in a morally corrupt industry, the better." Landsel gave high praise for each of the three Massachusetts butcher shops listed, crediting Brazeau's founder David Brazeau for transitioning a hobby into a successful business.
“David Brazeau made a name for himself in the Berkshires with a home butchering operation — something he did in his spare time, when he wasn’t running the meat department at a local supermarket,” Landsel wrote. “When the store closed, he decided to make it official; fans of his sourcing prowess (and his sausages) couldn’t be more pleased.”
Lansel also credited M.F. Dulock's monthly meat club as a "great way for novices to acquaint themselves with the pleasures of buying top quality."
He also called Savenor's a "Boston-area institution," noting that it was the official butcher of the Boston Red Sox and was sourced by Julia Child for several dishes.
