A Massachusetts woman received the best surprise possible just prior to the holiday season.
The woman's son, a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, disguised himself as a Stop & Shop driver delivering groceries to surprise her after being returning from home for the first time in more than a year and a half, WCVB reports.
The sergeant handed the flowers to his mother, who didn't seem to recognize him at first because he was wearing a face mask, hat and new glasses, but quickly became overwhelmed with excitement once he revealed his face. The marine spoke to WCVB prior to the reunion and predicted how it would turn out.
"She might scold me a little bit but she'll probably be in tears," the Marine said.
“I don’t even know where to begin. I am so gratified and I just can’t believe my son is here,” the mother told ABC 6. “I’m so in shock.”
Additionally, the homecoming also marked the first time the Marine met his young niece, WCVB reports.
The reunion was made possible by Stop & Shop and the United Service Organizations, WCVB reports. Stop & Shop will also be donating free groceries to the family for its Thanksgiving meal.
The U.S. Marine Corps. prevented all media outlets from disclosing the identities of the Marine and his family members, WCVB reports.
