A man wielding an axe was shot during an apparent theft in a Washington state parking lot, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
KATU reported that a man called dispatchers last Friday (November 20), saying he shot someone. Investigators said 48-year-old Aaron Dreyer was in the parking lot of a Lowe's when he saw a man dart out of the store with merchandise in-hand. Dreyer saw the man heading toward a car with a driver inside and decided to drive close to get the license plate number, police said. Officers added that man, identified as 22-year-old Kenneth Nigg, approached Dreyer's car.
That's when Nigg allegedly started attacking Dreyer's car with an axe handle, according to authorities. Nigg broke out the car's windows in the process, they added. Police said Dreyer managed to get out of his car, but Nigg started coming at the 48-year-old with the axe. Dreyer then pulled out his firearm and shot Nigg, officials said.
"Dreyer called 911 right after shooting Nigg. Police said he also aided him until emergency responders arrived. Nigg was then taken to the hospital where he remained through the weekend," KATU wrote.
The shooting is under investigation, but no arrests were made. No word on whether either man will face charges.
