Arlington Restaurant's 20-Pound Burger Is The Biggest In Texas

Salsa Joe's in Arlington is serving up the biggest burger in Texas.

The Tex-Mex joint now has a 20-pound burger called El Gordo (The Fat One) on its menu.

Owner Jonathan Schiller knows the big burger is 20-pounds because he measures and weighs all of the ingredients, starting with a 10-pound beef patty. The patty is so big that it has to be flipped with a cardboard box because a regular-sized spatula just won't do.

"We're not just trying to hit this record. We're trying to make a kick-ass burger," Schiller said in a video shared on the restaurant's Facebook page.

El Gordo comes with a five-pound bun, over a pound of cheese, half a pound of pickles, nearly a pound of onions and other toppings.

Schiller told WFAA that the group Everything’s Bigger in Texas gave him the idea to create the massive burger.

Texas is no stranger to big servings of beef. Big Lou's in San Antonio has a 12-pound burger, while Arnold's in Amarillo has a 24-inch wide hamburger.

Schiller says he's ready to take on anyone who tries to best his burger.

“If I have to make a bigger one to beat somebody else, then I’ll just have to make that happen. I’ve already got plans on how I’m going to do that," he said.

El Gordo is part of Salsa Joe's regular menu but it has to be ordered a day or so in advance. The burger isn't part of some gimmicky deal where one person has to eat the whole thing, and Schiller recommends sharing it with friends instead.
