California Governor Gavin Newsom reiterated that several regional stay-at-home orders, including the one in the San Joaquin Valley, are likely to extend well into the new year.

The stay-at-home order in the Valley was set to expire on Monday, Janurary 4, 2021.

Due to a lack of capacity in ICU and recent grim projections, Newsom said the order will probably continue past its scheduled expiration date.

In his COVID-19 update on Monday, December 28, Newsom stated that a formal announcement on the stay-at-home order's status will be made tomorrow, Tuesday, December 29.

The latest numbers for COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in each California region will be taken into account.

Fresno County currently has one of the highest rates of daily new infections in California.

According to the Merced Sun-Star, Fresno County was recently ranked no. 7 out of 58 California counties for the most COVID-19 cases.

In order for a region to get out of a stay-at-home order, ICU capacity would have to be at or above 15%.

On Sunday, December 27, the region's ICU availability was at 0.0% based on state statistics.

ABC30 reports that the San Joaquin Valley has the least available ICU space of any California region.
