The new year is bringing in a new law.

It will now be illegal for Arizona residents to text and drive.

Residents can use bluetooth and hands-free devices.

It will not longer be allowed to hold your phone in your hand, even when using a navigation device.

Governor Doug Ducey stated in April of 2019, "This bill will change behavior so that people won't be on their phone, so they won't be texting and change behavior and allow law enforcement latitude to be instructive. The objective here is to not write tickets, it's to save live."

The law bans anyone using electronic handheld devices, however, drivers can use their cellphones for reporting illegal activities or to call for help.

Drivers can also use their cell phones while parked or at red lights.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says that the following things will still be allowed:

  • engaging and disengaging a function such as GPS route start and answering or ending calls
  • talking on the portable wireless communication devices with earpieces, headphones, or devices worn on the wrist
  • using a device for vehicle navigation
  • using a device in an emergency situation to summon help or report a crime
