For the first time in the Dallas Zoo's 132-year history, guests were able to drive through the zoo at this year's holiday lights event.

Due to the extremely high demand and a popular first run, the Dallas Zoo is extending its drive-thru lights show event.

The event was originally supposed to last for 36 nights only, lasting through January 3rd. The event opens at 6:30 p.m. each night, and will now be extended through Saturday, January 9th.

Since the beginning of the event back in December, the Zoo has sold 24,000 tickets, which is nearly double what they expected.

The zoo is limiting the number of cars to about 600 per night, according to Dallas Zoo COO Sean Greene.

Profits from the event will help offset the past few months that the zoo was closed and limits guests due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"For everything that we've been through, the community has been through, this is a real opportunity for us to give hope to do this in a safe way. Who knows? You might see something similar, or a hybrid version of this Zoo Lights experience next year," Green said.

For the next two months, the Dallas Zoo is also starting its Penguin Days, which means $8 general admission tickets.
