The Water Tower Place Macy’s location is closing after 45 years in business on the Magnificent Mile.

Since opening in 1975, the department store has been a staple, either as Marshall Field’s or as Macy’s, WGN9 noted Wednesday morning (January 6).

In a statement, Macy’s officials said closing the store was a “difficult” decision.

The official closure of the Water Town Place location is still a few months away.

Shoppers can expect a clearance sale starting this month, lasting about 8 to 12 weeks. Non-seasonal employees will either transfer to another Macy’s location or be eligible for severance pay, according to a statement from Macy’s.

A Macy’s spokesperson told Chicago’s ABC affiliate that officials opted to close the Water Town Place location nearly a year ago, in February 2020.

"After careful consideration, Macy's has decided to close our Water Tower Place location. This closure is part of the company's strategy to right-size its store fleet, announced in early 2020,” a statement reads, in part. “Macy's is committed to the greater Chicago community. We will continue to serve our customers at Macy's on State Street as well as in a number of suburban locations such as Old Orchard, Oakbrook, Woodfield, Orland Park and Hawthorn Court or online at macys.com and the Macy's app."
