There are many big decisions to make when it comes to starting and raising a family. Raising a healthy family sometimes even requires moving to a new place.

That's why WalletHub compared all 50 states across key indicators of family-friendliness.

Although California came a bit further down the list, it was still a long shot away from being in the bottom ten. According to the study, California is the 25th best state to raise a family.

Based on their scores in categories like "Family Fun," "Health & Safety," "Education & Child Care," "Affordability," and "Socioeconomics," the study found that these were the top ten best states to raise a family:

  1. Massachusetts
  2. Minnesota
  3. North Dakota
  4. New York
  5. Vermont
  6. New Hampshire
  7. New Jersey
  8. Washington
  9. Connecticut
  10. Utah

And the top ten worst states to raise a family are:

  1. New Mexico
  2. Mississippi
  3. West Virginia
  4. Lousiana
  5. Oklahoma
  6. Arkansas
  7. Alabama
  8. South Carolina
  9. Arizona
  10. Nevada

To determine which states were the best and worst, Wallethub evaluated the previously mentioned categories using 52 relevant metrics. For "Family Fun" they compared each state's amount of fitness and recreation sports centers. For "Health & Safety" they compared the number of pediatricians in each state. For "Education & Child Care," they researched the quality of public schools and day-care in every state.
