Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer is getting started on his plan to beautify Fresno starting with the downtown area and along the freeways.
On Monday, January 18, Beautify Fresno hosted two community clean up events downtown. One event took place in the Fulton District and the other in the Lowell Neighborhood, according to FOX26.
The events drew over 200 volunteers from around the community.
"We have allowed the new norm to be one of blight, litter, and debris within our business complexes, streets, neighborhoods, and freeways," said Mayor Dyer in an official statement. "The trash is so visible, yet many drive by without noticing it. That must change."
The Beautify Fresno initiative is a city-wide effort to clean up trash and litter in neighborhoods, streets, and highways with the help of local organizations and volunteers from the community.
Mayor Dyer's goal is to create "curb appeal" block by block in every neighborhood.
The initiative is also committed to eliminating homeless encampments along Fresno's freeways and getting those individuals into shelters.
"Relocating those individuals from the freeway housing through a project called Housing Off-ramp. Off-ramp to homelessness and off-ramp to having a productive life and being provides [sic] services and housing."
