Imagine hooking up with a musician who feels so inspired that they lean over your body to write down lyrics. Now imagine that song becoming one of the most iconic grunge anthems of all time.
A woman named Tracy lived that story, and she called in to The Angi Taylor Show on Rock 955 in Chicago to divulge a little secret: Eddie Vedder wrote "Black" while having sex with her. After explaining that she met the Pearl Jam frontman through some friends, Tracy said they "hit it off" immediately, which led to the moment of inspiration.
"We were hanging out and he wrote the first couple lines kind of over my body," she recalled, referring to the lyrics Sheets of empty canvas/ Untouched sheets of clay. "He was on top of me and then he leaned over and wrote down the words that he said to me. My skin was the canvas and my makeup was clay."
Tracy went on to reveal she and Vedder were an item for seven weeks, and that the song was named after her. "Black is a person. Black is me," she said. "When he first saw me he said I just look black. When he says ‘the pictures were washed in black,’ he literally took pictures of his life before me and put them on my belly."
She admitted people don't usually believe her story, but if it's true then it gives the song a whole new meaning! Hear Tracy's confession, and then listen to "Black with a whole new perspective, below.
