The man convicted of murdering 11 women has died in prison.

The Ohio Department of Corrections confirmed that Anthony Sowell, 61, died Monday (February 8) after receiving end-of-life care for a terminal illness — unrelated to COVID-19, officials said — at Franklin Medical Center in Columbus.

Sowell was convicted of murdering 11 women in 2011.

Two years earlier, law enforcement officers searched Sowell’s Cleveland home while investigating a rape case. While searching the home, authorities discovered bodies of two of Sowell’s victims. Ultimately, they uncovered buried remains of 11 women, according to USA Today.

Those deaths spanned 2007 to 2009, CNN reported. Remains of two women were found in Sowell’s attic, and others were found throughout the property. Victims ranged in age from 25 to 52.

Sowell was convicted of nearly a dozen counts of aggravated murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. He was also charged with kidnapping, attempted murder and other charges, state records show.

In 2011, Sowell’s house was demolished and the convicted murderer was sentenced to death for his crimes. But in the past decade, Sowell repeatedly attempted to appeal his charges.

But in his most recent attempt, a three-judge panel unanimously decided that there was not enough evidence to support that Sowell didn’t receive a fair trial, according to the Associated Press.
