Valentine's Day. Depending on your relationship status, you may either be anticipating the most romantic day of the year or completely dreading it. But have you considered that where you live may play a factor in your love life?

To help figure out why some people may be more lucky in love than others, WalletHub released a study comparing the best and worst states for singles. States like Florida and New York rank high because of ample dating opportunities and romantic and fun activities, while states like New Mexico and West Virginia don't have as many opportunities for those without romantic partners.

So where did South Carolina rank?

The Palmetto State came in at number 31 on the list. Neither wholly good nor bad for those looking for a relationship, South Carolina ranks near the middle for dating opportunities and romantic activities compared to other states.

Here are the top 10 best states for singles:

  1. Florida
  2. Texas
  3. Pennsylvania
  4. Wisconsin
  5. New York
  6. Illinois
  7. California
  8. Ohio
  9. Michigan
  10. Missouri

To determine the list, WalletHub compared each state using three factors: dating economics, dating opportunities, and romance and fun. These factors were then evaluated using 27 relevant metrics, including share of single adults, gender balance of singles, online and mobile dating opportunities, average beer and wine price, job growth rate, restaurants per capita, crime rate, online dating safety, and more.
